Tamlin's Story

Tamlin developed some very interesting habits.  Normally cats do not like water.  Not only did Tamlin like water, he was obsessed with it!  He would sit for hours next to the kitchen sink waiting for the faucet to drip.  Often he would get right in the sink if I left the water on and drink from the faucet.  If I ran the dishwasher, he would be right there waiting for the magic moment when all the water would drain out of the dishwasher and some would back up into the sink.  He would quiver, come to attention then leap up to stare until every bit of water left the sink.

Many nights I would get quite a scare if getting up to go to the bathroom.  Since I didn't want to really wake up I wouldn't turn any lights on.  I would put my hands out to the sink then scream when touching a ball of fur.  Turning the lights on would reveal Tamlin curled up in a tight ball sleeping in the sink.  Now I knew he loved water, but to actually sleep in the sink?  And many times when Joy took her shower she would give up and just let Tamlin stay in and play.  That cat really loved water!

Every now and then the cats would run out the door while we were letting the dogs out.  I never had any problems getting Tamlin back in.  All I had to do was to put a bowl of water by the door and splash it a little with my fingers.  Tamlin would come running in and stand staring at the bubbles in the water.  Carefully he would put his paws in and try to catch them.  He could also be easily distracted from eating dinner by putting down a fresh bowl of water.  He would stop eating and run right over to play in the fresh water.

Tamlin continued to love computers as he grew up.  You could find him often lurking around behind Jessie's computer.  If Jessie was building or repairing a computer, Tamlin would be right there trying to help him.  It got a little crowded with two hands and two paws inside a computer.  As for me, Tamlin's favorite thing to do to me was to steal my computer chair.  There were times when I just gave up and let him have it.  I respected the fact that he was so fond of hanging out with us on the computers.

Remember I said Marble moved back in with us?  He had gone to live with a friend of Joy's, but he had an accident there with the small children.  He came back to our house to recouperate and never left.  In the Spring of 1999, Pepper came as a houseguest and ended up not leaving either.  Pepper, Tamlin and Marble were all about the same age, but it was Pepper and Tamlin that formed a close bond.  Both were very smart kitties that seemed to always be in some kind of trouble.  Many nights I would hear loud crashes upstairs, Joy yelling and then cats would come flying down the stairs.  Always it would be Pepper and Tamlin leading the pack.  Then Tamlin would look over at me with his "I didn't do anything" look.  Sure Tamlin, I believe you.
